For those exploring art therapy in Nashville, art therapy offers a way to work with experiences that may be difficult to express through words alone. Through creative expression and the therapeutic relationship, the process can create space for curiosity, reflection, and deeper understanding.
1. What makes art therapy different from simply making art?
Art may be the medium, but the relationship is what holds the work. Art therapy is a specialized modality facilitated by a credentialed art therapist.
In our work, the process matters more than the piece and creating becomes a ritual of attention. It asks us to stay with an experience long enough to notice more than just the version we can easily put into words.
My role is not to interpret your work for you, but to help you stay curious about what emerges. That shared curiosity is where art-making deepens into therapeutic work.
2. Does someone need to consider themselves artistic or creative to benefit?
Not at all! Art therapy asks for willingness, not artistic ability. There is no pressure to create something “right” or perfect. The work can be (and often is) messy, unfinished, abstract, or known only to you. Sometimes the pieces that feel the least like “art” hold the most truth because you gave them the freedom to just be!
3. Why can creative expression sometimes access things that are difficult to put into words?
So much of being human happens beyond language. Experience reaches us first through the body, through image, sensation, memory, and feeling, often long before words arrive. I used to believe that if I could find exactly the right words, I could make an experience neat enough to understand and small enough to hold. Understanding an experience and being in contact with it are not always the same thing, though.
I love that creative expression offers another way in. Something can be given shape, witnessed, and held before it has to be made understandable. Once it exists outside of you, we can sit beside it together and listen for the wisdom it may be ready to share.
4. What might someone actually do during an art therapy session?
Every client wants something a little different. Some simply want to keep their hands busy while we talk. Others want to explore consciousness through color oracles, personal symbols, and imaginative prompts. We may reach for paint, collage, fiber, or even needlepoint, but the materials are always chosen around what feels most inviting and supportive to you. There is no formula. We build the experience around you.
5. Who do you find is particularly drawn to or supported by this kind of work?
Art therapy is for the person who feels comforted knowing there is no single right way to show up to therapy. It often resonates with people who feel like words have only taken them so far, whether they can explain everything and still feel stuck or do not know where to begin at all.
Much of my work meets people at a threshold. I support those navigating anxiety, OCD, grief, and the uncertain space between who they have been and who they are becoming.
