What is Somatic Therapy (and What Happens in a Somatic Therapy Session)?

If you’ve never experienced trauma-informed somatic healing before, you might be asking yourself: What is somatic therapy, and what actually happens in a session?

First, what is somatic therapy?

Unlike talk therapy, which often lives in the realm of the mind, somatic therapy invites you into the sacred language of the body through embodiment, sensation, rhythm, and movement. Each session is a soft container for remembering. You don’t have to perform, impress, or explain. There is no right or wrong way to show up. You simply get to be.

Now, let me ask you a question… What if your body already knows the way? This is somatic healing: not a path of fixing, but of remembering. A journey inward to the parts of yourself that have longed to be seen, felt, and reclaimed.

This work is less about “fixing” and more about feeling. It’s about reclaiming what you’ve suppressed, honoring your cycles, and remembering your wholeness. You’ll leave feeling more grounded, more connected, and more at home in yourself. It is sacred. And it is yours.

First things first: What is a somatic therapist or somatic practitioner?

A somatic therapist or somatic practitioner is someone trained to support healing through the body. The word somatic comes from the Greek word soma, meaning “the living body.” Rather than focusing only on thoughts or conscious verbal processing, somatic therapists or somatic practitioners focus on accessing the subconscious mind as well as the physical, energetic, and intuitive experiences of the body (because that’s where so much of our trauma, memory, and wisdom lives).

As a somatic practitioner, my role is to gently guide you back into connection with your body using trauma-informed practices like breathwork, movement, embodied meditation, and nervous system regulation. This work is not about diagnosing or fixing, it’s about listening, softening, and creating space for your body to safely express what it’s been holding.

So, what happens in a somatic therapy session?

Every session is unique, but the flow often follows a gentle rhythm designed to help you feel safe, grounded, and deeply connected to yourself. Here’s what to generally expect in a trauma-informed Somatic Therapy session:

Grounding + Intention Setting
We begin by arriving fully into the space together. Through a simple grounding practice, breath, or meditation, you’ll settle into your body and set an intention for our time. This helps your nervous system shift into safety and presence.

Tuning Into the Body
From there, we gently explore the messages your body is holding. This involves body mapping, noticing sensations, breath patterns, or areas of tension. You don’t need to force anything—simply becoming curious is the first step toward deep healing.

Somatic Therapies
Depending on your needs that day, we might work with:

  • Embodied Meditation for connecting mind, body, and spirit
    • What it’s like: Embodied Meditation is a somatic practice that guides you to gently reconnect with your body’s sensations, emotions, and inner wisdom, fostering deep alignment between mind, body, and spirit for holistic healing and presence.
  • Somatic Movement
    • What it’s like: Somatic movement is a way to reclaim your body through gentle, embodied movement. Using myofascial work, we release trauma and suppressed emotion, inviting your body’s innate wisdom to flow freely.
  • Breathwork & Vagus Nerve Toning
    • What it’s like: Harness the power of your breath and voice. Through Breathwork and Vagus Nerve Vocal Toning, we regulate your nervous system, release trapped energy, and unlock profound healing.
  • EFT Tapping & Affirmation Work
    • What it’s like: A powerful blend of acupressure and mindful language, EFT Tapping helps release stored stress and emotional blocks while affirmations rewire your thoughts toward clarity, confidence, and self-compassion.
  • Inner Child or Parts Exploration
    • What it’s like: Embrace your inner “parts” with love and tenderness. We will heal past wounds, reclaim lost joy, and reconnect with the powerful essence of your true self.
  • Cycle Syncing & Womb Wisdom
    • What it’s like: Reconnect with your body’s innate rhythms through cycle syncing and womb wisdom practices, exploring your menstrual phases and symptoms as powerful guides for healing, self-awareness, and living in harmony with your natural cycles.
  • Ritual Creation
    • What it’s like: These are actionable steps you can take from our work together and integrate into your everyday life. Together we will reawaken your connection to the cycles of nature through sacred rituals that embody the seasons, helping you align with their rhythm and flow in your daily life.

Integration + Closing
We always close with integration, allowing space for your body and mind to absorb what unfolded. This might be stillness, reflection, or a gentle practice to carry with you. You’ll leave feeling more grounded, more spacious, and more at home in yourself.

Through trauma-informed somatic practices, nervous system repair, and ritual, we create a safe and sacred space for you to explore the messages your body has been whispering. This is not about looking outside of yourself for healing. It’s about reconnecting to the wisdom that already lives within you. Think of it as a remembering of your wholeness, your power, your truth.

No two sessions are alike. Your body leads the way, and my role is to guide, hold space, and help you remember the wisdom you already carry.

Are you ready to unlock the wisdom of your body?

Somatic Therapy is waiting for you.
